Teaching us about our animal friends

Houston SPCA Critter Camp 2013

As summer break winds down we are still having fun at the Houston SPCA’s Summer Critter Camp!

Throughout the summer, campers from all over the Houston area came to our shelter to learn about the wide world of animals.

This year we had three camps available for kids:

Pets and Pals Camp for campers who have graduated 2nd and 3rd grade.

Wild About Animals Camp for campers who have graduated 4th, 5th, and 6th grade.

Team Teen Camp for campers who have graduated 7th and 8th grade.

Every day campers were able to play with our adoptable shelter dogs and cats, have fun with arts and crafts, visit our barn, play games, and make new friends!

Campers experienced a  variety of animal-related lessons including basic animal care, animal behavior and training, helping Texas wildlife, how to help stop animal cruelty, and careers in animal science.

We have had some amazing guests come by camp this year to speak to our campers including our very own Houston SPCA veterinarians and animal behavior specialists!

The Texas A&M PEER Program came by camp to teach our campers how to recognize different types of animal behavior, what technology is used to help animals today, and what you need to do to work with animals when you grow up. We loved seeing them every week!

Texas A&M Visit

We would like to give a big thank you to our local therapy animal group who was kind enough to bring therapy dogs and cats to our Pets and Pals Camp. We know the interactions between the animals and campers will give a lifetime of memories!

One of our most exciting guests to come to camp this year was the Canine Program at the METRO Police Department. We have learned so much about the world of dogs with jobs including narcotics detection, explosive detection and criminal apprehension. Thank you METRO!!
